Room Painting

How to paint baseboards:

Unless you're a painting professional, and you wouldn't need to read this if you were, you will need to tape the floor and the wall. You will need to use wide painters tape on the floor (2 inch width) and a thinner painters tape on the wall (1" inch width). You will need to buy trim paint from your local paint store. This will be a high acrylic paint that is durable, and in a semi-gloss or glossy finish. Use a 2-2 1/2" angled brush to apply the trim paint.

How to pick paint colours:

Pick a colour in a major piece of furniture, artwork, or prominent piece with the space. Take those colours and pick the ones you like the best. Then go to your local paint store and and find that colour. The other option is to choose a colour that is complimentary to one you chose. Does all of this sound like a headache? That's why we have professional colour consultants that can help you find the best colours for your space. Click here to book your in home colour consultation now!

What type of paint should I choose:

The type of paint depends on the type of space you are painting. A bathroom or kitchen is typically a semi-gloss. A bedroom or living room is typically an eggshell or satin. The ceiling is typically painted with a flat paint. Trim and baseboards are painted with a high acrylic trim paint.

How to paint ceilings:

TO "CUT" the paint, is for serious painting professionals. There is no painters tape involved just a steady hand. You will need a 2" angled, fine hair, brush and nerves of steel. This will require going around the room and getting your brush in the corner but not touching the wall. You then start painting in a steady motion. Good Luck!

Painting your Ceiling

How to paint ceilings:

If you are a first time painter then using a 1" width painters tape around the top edge of the wall will be helpful. This will keep you from painting the wall edge. Ceiling painting is done with a flat white paint. It is best to use a roller handle that attaches to an extension pole. You can paint the ceiling from the floor and your painting goes much faster.

What type of paint to use for ceilings:

A flat white paint is the most typical choice for painting your ceiling. Ceiling paint comes in many different colours but choosing something other that a white tone can be a little bit tricky. We strongly suggest asking a professional colour consultant about this choice.

Painting a Door

How to prep a door for painting

To prepare a door for painting first you need some 120 grit sand paper, a screw driver, and a hammer. First tap the bolts out of the hinges.(You may need two people for this job) This will allow you to remove the door. Now take your door to area where you can paint it without worry of dropping paint. (garage, unfinished basement, shop floor) Use the sandpaper to "rough up" the door and make sure to get in the smaller cracks. This will allow the paint to have a great adhesion("stickyness"). Now wipe any debris from sanding off of the door.

Your best case scenario for painting a door is to have a sprayer, but you can also use a brush. Make sure you cover the whole door evenly with paint on all sides. Do one side then allow some time to dry, TURN, then paint the opposite side. You will usually need two coats on a door so you'll need a gallon of paint.

How to pick door paint that will last:

Using a Semi-Gloss paint for a door is most common. It allows the door to 'stand out' and due to the paint contents it is more durable and will withstand wear better. It is also easier to clean.

How to apply door paint

Applying door paint is best done with a paint sprayer. You can however use any tool. A roller, painting pad, or brush can be used as well to paint the door. When using a roller, please note, once you have rolled on the paint you will need to brush the stipple left by the roller. A roller tends to leave a light texture which is great for walls but doesn't look so good on a door.

Painting a bathroom

What kind of paint should I use in the bathroom:

Usually, the shinier the paint, the easier it is to clean and it resists moisture better. We recommend semi-gloss paint in bathrooms as it practically repels moisture. Eggshell and satin paints can be used if your bathroom doesn't get much use(guest bathroom)

Can I paint the Caulking around the sink:

It should be paintable. However, there are many different types of caulking. Typically used around a sinks outer edge is paintable white caulking.

Painting a Kitchen

What kind of paint should I use for my kitchen cabinets:

This is not a DIY for the feint of heart. First step is to take all of the doors, and drawer faces off. Once that is done you will need to use a 100 grit sandpaper to 'rough' the doors and drawer faces. Then a primer is required. We strongly suggest using a high quality primer for this project. Then comes painting your kitchen cabinets. We STRONGLY recommend using a paint sprayer. You do not want any texture in the finish and sprayer is one of the only ways to 'ensure' that doesn't happen.

To get the best result and a longer lasting finish use a paint that is designed to go on cabinet doors and drawers. It will durable and not crack or chip as easily as other paints may.
